Republicans Embrace the Participation Trophy
For this election season, we've heard the gripes of the neocons when it comes to the horrorshow that the liberals feed on. One of my favorite gripes was the conservative disgust of the participation trophy, and that's because I agree that these awards are complete nonsense. It didn't take more than googling "how does the Electoral College work" before the neocons embraced the participation trophy. They took the participation trophy, cleaned off their fireplace mantle, and the propped that trophy on top of it with a spot light next to the W. Bush participation trophy they won in 2000. They invited their friends over to crow about how this trophy was a symbol of their win, and how their opponent was butthurt over losing to them.
It is a strange political trophy. I've never watched a football game that ends with one team scoring more points than the other, and then the officials decide that the points don't matter. Then the officials award the win to the loser. Imagine you watched a game like this. You think you'd be a bit upset at that result if you were rooting for the team that ended up losing after getting more points? One thing that is certain is that the winning team will always celebrate their victory regardless of this. The winning team will find a way to defend the officials overriding the final score. They will not be convinced that anything unfair ever happened.
This behavior has become a constant for Republicans.Despite Democrats or third parties generally also engaging in this comfort of cognitive dissonance, Republicans have a monopoly on it. They propose that Trump never mocked a disabled man and they do not condone mocking the disabled, yet they have no problem labeling their political opponents "libtards." They have a problem with celebrities giving political speech when it opposes their views, but they take full comfort in celebrity Donald Trump expressing his political views. They have a deep fear of immigrants raping American women, but they have no problem with a man who has confessed to sexually assaulting multiple women.
The truth is these people don't care that they are hypocrites. They will many times have a logical fallacy that gives them enough comfort, and if they don't have that they simply don't care. It's comfortable for them to operate in this fashion. Historically, this is a dangerous type of culture. It's the culture that has existed before with McCarthyism, the Salem Witch trials, and the Dark Ages. "We don't care if we are wrong as long as we feel right." This has been the slogan of trying times before, and it could very well be here again.
Hold tight to your participation trophies. When you're on your death bed after your insurance company has denied to cover you, at least you will die with the comfort of knowing you won.
